For years, I admired the house directly across the street from my own home. I was particularly drawn to its covered front porch, a feature I had always wished my own house possessed.
Working in gouache, I explored the warm colors of the house, its architectural details, and the interplay of sunlight and shadow. Using loose, expressive brushwork, I wanted to capture the familiar charm of a house I had admired for so many years.
When my brother Charlie saw the painting, he encouraged me to give it to the homeowners. "I don't know why you don't give it to them," he said. I eventually took his advice and presented it to them while Charlie was in the hospital.
What began as my admiration for a neighbor's porch became a personal gift, made even more meaningful by my brother's encouragement.
