In Full Splendor

Watercolor

This beautiful purple bearded iris was growing in front of my home, among the many irises that originated from a small potted plant in my mother's backyard. Over the years, those few plants have multiplied into a magnificent display of blooms each spring.

Working from a photograph I took, I approached this watercolor quite differently from another painting I created using the same reference. Rather than concentrating primarily on delicate details, I wanted to emphasize the flower's dramatic shapes, rich colors, and expressive character.

I explored the interplay of deep violets, warm purples, and soft lavender-pinks, contrasting the luminous petals against a darker, atmospheric background. The intricate white markings and brilliant golden center provided an opportunity to capture the striking natural patterns of this beautiful flower.

For me, this painting celebrates the extraordinary beauty and almost sculptural elegance of an iris in full bloom, while preserving another connection to the garden my mother loved.
