Water-Based Painting

While spending time in my garden, I photographed this robin as it settled among the surrounding vegetation. I was attracted to the bird's dark plumage and reddish breast against the lively greens and yellows of the garden.

Working from my photograph, I wanted to capture the spontaneity of this fleeting encounter rather than create a highly detailed bird portrait. I enjoyed exploring the contrast between the robin's more defined form and the loosely painted vegetation surrounding it.

To suggest the fine blades of grass and natural textures of the garden, I used a scratching technique, removing small areas of paint to reveal lighter marks beneath. The combination of expressive brushwork and scratched highlights helped me convey the lively, somewhat untamed character of the setting.

This painting preserves one of those simple moments of observing nature that can provide unexpected inspiration.
