My brother Charlie was an exceptionally long driver of the golf ball, something that never failed to amaze the golfers who played with him. Even more remarkable was his ability to accomplish this while keeping a cigar in his mouth!

Working from a photograph I took of Charlie preparing to tee off at Glenwood Golf Club, I wanted to capture one of those familiar moments on the course. I often wondered whether the cigar actually helped his swing, encouraging him to maintain a slower, more controlled motion rather than overswinging.

Surrounded by the beautiful autumn colors of Glenwood, Charlie stands ready to send another ball soaring down the fairway, cigar firmly in place.

For me, this painting preserves more than a moment in a round of golf. It captures something unmistakably Charlie—his remarkable driving ability, his characteristic cigar, and the many wonderful hours we spent enjoying the game together.
