I created this graphite portrait of Drogo, my nephew's beloved rescue dog, as a surprise Christmas gift. Drogo was such a happy little fellow, with a sweet disposition and wonderfully expressive eyes.
Working from a photograph I took of him relaxing on the couch, I was particularly drawn to his comfortable pose and the gentle, inquisitive expression on his face. Using graphite, I concentrated on capturing the subtle variations of light and shadow, the texture of his short fur, and the natural contours of his body. The surrounding cushions provided an opportunity to explore deeper values while keeping Drogo's familiar features as the center of attention.
There is something especially rewarding about creating a portrait of an animal who has become such an important part of someone's family. Knowing that this drawing would be an unexpected Christmas gift made it particularly special to me.
