Watercolor Portrait

Sugar came into my life under heartbreaking circumstances. After her owner passed away, she had been confined to an upstairs room of a house for many weeks, without adequate food or water. By the time a real estate agent I knew approached me about giving her a home, Sugar was severely dehydrated and starving. I was told she was a kitten, but she was actually a much older cat.

Although we gave Sugar a safe, loving home for many years, her difficult past seemed to have left its mark. She remained wary of people and never became comfortable with being picked up or held. Yet she developed a special affection for my boyfriend, Vinnie, and absolutely adored my cat Dean.

Working from a photograph I took of Sugar, I wanted to capture her beautiful green eyes, watchful expression, and the relaxed position of her outstretched legs. I particularly enjoyed the contrast between the warmth of her brown fur and the soft lavender shadows surrounding her.

Sugar may never have become a conventional affectionate house cat, but she found a place where she was safe, cared for, and free to be herself. Her story reminds me that love and trust can take many different forms.
