Working from a photograph I took of my beloved cat Dean, I was particularly drawn to the way his familiar face emerged from the surrounding shadows. His expressive eyes, distinctive markings, and quiet, watchful gaze seemed especially suited to the subtle tonal qualities of graphite.
I concentrated on the interplay of light and shadow, carefully developing the details of his eyes and facial features while allowing the surrounding fur and body to gradually disappear into the darker background. I wanted to preserve the intimate, slightly mysterious quality of this moment, capturing another glimpse of Dean's individual character.
